The Fight Over Jesus In South Dakota

Democrats are tired of letting Republicans own the faith and values message, so they are taking their case to the streets.

A billboard campaign was launched Monday by the Minneheha County’s Grassroots Democrats, letting people know what their party stands for, says chairwoman Lisa Engels.

Green, black and white signs at Seventh Street and Minnesota Avenue and at Russell Street and Westport Avenue say: “Jesus cares for the poor, so do we. Democrats make America stronger.”

“The whole thing behind it is to counteract the Christian right and their so-called monopoly on religion,” Engels said. “They have been able to get out there and convince people that the flag wraps better around them than it does us, and that is not true.”

Doug-
Saw 'the Motorcycle Diaries' yesterday after our discussion and the advise of many friends. Great movie. This post kind of reminds me when the boy says, "This building belongs to Jesus Christ, Inc." And Che says, "They're still in business?" I just loathe the idea of people using the name of Jesus for anything political, whether Democrat or Republican. Hate to see the Democrats have stooped as well now.

What's up with the random capitalization on that sign?

(And is it totally pathetic that that's all I have to say about it? Can't. Get. Past. Random. Capital. Letters. ACK! HELP!)

I agree, using the name Jesus for political gain is loathsome ! ! !

Perhaps these folks just felt they needed to clarify the distortions and manipulations of Christianity from the 'other party'.

Regardless, actions always speak louder than words.

ps - never seen Motorcycle Diaries . . . highly recommended ?

All first letters capitalized would have been much better than random first letters capitalized. Why capitalize Cares and Poor, but not We? (And why does this matter so much to me? Is it my English degree begging to be used for something other than just sparkling dinner conversation?)

Oh, wait, they did capitalize We. How about poor so and do? They feel left out.
